In an enlightening conversation with Annabel Amos on BBC Radio Northampton today, 11-year-old prodigy author, Aston Smith, returned to the
studio to update listeners about his journey as an author. This interview marks a significant milestone following a year of remarkable
achievements and media attention for Aston, including a memorable discussion with Annabel Amos in April 2023.
Aston's literary adventure began at the tender age of 8 when he penned his first book about space titled
The Solar System during
lockdown. Living with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), he has not only overcome challenges,
but also leveraged his neurodiversity to fuel his creativity and passion for astronomy. His latest book, which was released on World Book day in 2023,
aims to inspire and educate, showcasing what children that are neurodivergent can accomplish with the right encouragement and support.
The support by
Persimmon Homes to purchase 225 copies of
Things About Space
for distribution in schools underscores Aston's commitment to fostering learning and understanding. This project celebrates Aston's
achievements and spreads his message of hope and curiosity to a wider audience.
Aston's journey over the past 12 months has captured the hearts and minds of people across various platforms. After sparking media
interest with his first interview with Annabel Amos, he was featured on
BBC Breakfast by Charlie Stayt and Nina Warhurst,
ITV News, Revolution Radio, and numerous podcasts
including TGP Nominal. His voice resonated at a SEN conference held by Nottinghamshire Keyworking Service, and he graced the pages of
the Sun newspaper
BBC News, Astronomy NOW magazine, and
The Week Junior magazine. Aston's engagements at several SEN and disability events have further solidified his role as a beacon of inspiration.
Beyond his literary success, Aston has demonstrated remarkable generosity. Fulfilling his pledge, he has donated £2 from the sale of the
first 500 copies of his second book to the charity UK Astronomy, in addition to £150 donated from the sale of his first book, Aston has contributed
a total of £1,150. This act of kindness reflects his desire to give back to the community that shares his passion for the stars.
Things About Space is not just any book; it is an interactive journey through the cosmos. Equipped with QR codes, readers can scan them with
a compatible device and listen to Aston narrate each page, making the complex cosmos accessible to young minds. This innovative approach allows
children, especially those who may struggle with complex terminology or that may have difficulties reading, to explore the universe in a unique and engaging manner.
As a member of the team at UK Astronomy, Aston continues to inspire and educate. His story is a testament to the
extraordinary potential within each child, especially those that are neurodivergent, to explore their creativity and make significant
contributions to their fields of interest.
Aston Smith's message is clear: with passion, support, and creativity, the sky is not the limit; it's just the beginning.
